Our Media Fact sheet archive is on the Media Shared drive: M:\Resources\A Level\Media Fact sheets - you'll need to save the fact sheet to USB or email it to yourself in order to complete this at home. Read the fact sheet and answer the following questions:

The main purpose is to sell products.

Now people can watch on sites such as YouTube so they can watch wherever and whenever they like.

Movement, Narrative, Band/Artist and Intertextuality.

5) How can narrative be used in music video? Give an example of a music video that uses a narrative.

The Twilight movie soundtrack has a narrative seeing as it tells a story about troubled relationships from a girls perspective.

6) What examples are provided in the factsheet for intertextuality in music videos?

The appearance of Hayley Williams in the Twilight soundtrack seems to be inspired by Bella from Twilight.

7) Why do audiences enjoy intertextual references in media products?

When audiences recognise the media texts/images being reflected in the videos, they are rewarded with the fact that they are familiar of this text.

8) Read the music video example analysis on page 3 of the factsheet. Select a music video of your own choice and wr`ite your own analysis using the following headings:

  • Conventions (movement/narrative/artist)
The artist is talking about things he can relate to and he is talking about the way violence seems to be getting worse. He seems to have a connection with the things he talks about.
  • Intertextuality
The fact that he is performing on a stage in front of judges reminds me of talent shows and he seems to be mocking entertainment shows such as "Britains Got Talent" and "X Factor".
  • Representation
The video draws attention to the crimes going on at the moment involving young adults and teenagers and the way the people growing up around the "hood" are portrayed in the news.
  • Audience
I feel like he is trying to relate with other people like him that have the same opinion and he is speaking up for them but I also feel like he is trying to target people that don't understand the lifestyle he is living in.
  • Institution

9) Watch the video for Ice Cube's It Was A Good Day (1993). How did this video set the conventions for later hip-hop music videos?

10) How important do you think music videos are in the marketing and promotion of music artists in 2018? Are music videos essential to a band or artist's success?

I think they are because they keep their fans entertained and expecting good videos.
