Film noir research

Film Noir

Film noir is known for using very dull lighting and lots of shadows, even though the films were in black and white the lighting used still made a huge difference in film noir movies the were horror they would use lots of shadows (low-key lighting) and the characters faces were not clearly seen because the lighting was not very good however this was done deliberately to set the mood of the genre and create more mystery.
When the genre of the movie was romantic then the lighting would be more high-key and natural seeing as they wanted the theme to seem more like a every day mood and not something so dramatic.
During the time when film noir came about there was not really many genres, and all film noir clips look quite similar.
The men were dressed up in their suits and ties either holding a cigarette or a gun, they were stereotyped as very masculine so most movies would have their men characters like this and the women were dressed in their nice dresses with their make upon and they were almost always dependant on the man character

In this clip you can see that the lighting at the start had shadows which was to probably make the scene more mysterious and once they are inside of the room there is use of high-key lighting which made it seem normal
